In Duplicate State of Florida County of Jefferson Agreement made between T.J. Eppes of said county & the undersigned freedmen & laborers. The said Eppes hereby hires the said freedmen to work & labor on his plantation for the year 1867, and agrees to give them one third (1/3) of all the cotton & corn and cane made by them & housed by them in said year, and to give each of them three (3) pounds of meal per week. In consideration of the above the said freedmen hereby hire themselves to the said T.J. Eppes for the year 1867, to work on his plantation; they agree to obey all his orders implicitly, or the orders of his agent; to be industrious & to do all work required of them, and for absence or failure to work every day in each week (Sunday excepted) they agree to be charged one Dollar for each day so lost, said money to be divided as follows: 2/3 to said Eppes & the rest to the hands; to keep fences in order & repair around the land allotted to them; not to be insolent or impertinent; not to ride his mules or horses; to attend to mules & horses at all times; not to destroy any of his property; and to be responsible for all things placed in their charge; and for advances of money or other things they agree to pay him out of the cotton & corn made by them.
