State of Florida County of Jefferson Articles of agreement made and entered into the 9th of March 1867 between E.W. Stephens of the first part and the Freedmen whose names are signed below of the second part. Witnessesth that the said Stephens agrees to find land, teams and tools, and feed the teams, and to give to each hand two hundred lbs of pork or bacon, and also to give to the party of the second part one third part of all crops raised by them on said Stephen’s plantation in the state and county above written. Also to furnish each family with two acres of land free of charge, provided that the party of the second part perform the following conditions which they hereby bind themselves to do. Viz, they are to labor on the above named plantation the entire year 1867 till Dec 25th 1867 and do all any every kind of plantation work with the said Stephens or his agent may direct, to take good care of all tools furnished them, to return the same at the end of the year, are to labor the usual number of hours per day, and for all lost time, from idleness

or from other unnecessary cause, the party so losing time shall forfeit one dollar per day, and if from sickness or permission of said Stephens 50 cts per day, said money to be divided as follows: ⅔ to said Stephens & the remainder between the hands. All differences which they cannot mutually settle on account of this contract shall be referred to a Board of Arbitration composed of two reliable citizens, one selected by each party and the agent of the B.R.F.& A.L., whose decision shall be final.
