Description
Testimony of Willie Evans. Willie Evans was 16 years old and living in Rosewood with his grandparents, Ransom and Julia Evans, during the Rosewood massacre. In his testimony, Evans describes the community of Rosewood prior to the massacre and the various families who lived there, including his own.Evans describes the first few days of violence in Rosewood and how his grandmother took him to Wylly while his grandfather stayed behind at their home. In Wylly, Evans remembers seeing trucks with armed white men in the back travelling in the direction of Rosewood. Evans claims that he returned to Rosewood around one year after the massacre and noted that all the homes were burned down except for two. Evans notes that the massacre impacted him economically, as his family lost land in the area because of the massacre. Evans also says that he never talked about Rosewood until now. Willie Evans is cross examined by James Peters, Assistant Attorney General for the state of Florida.
