Articles of agreement made and entered into this day of January 1867 between John M. Kyle, employer of the first part, the laborers whose names are hereto [?] of the second part. Witnesseth that the said [John M.] Kyle for and in consideration of the labor to be performed by the said laborers as hereinafter specified [agrees] to & hereby binds himself to furnish the said laborers [page torn] quarters and 156 lbs of meat for each full hand and to deliver and turn over to them one-third part of all the crops made & gathered by them in the present year on the plantation belong to the estate of Paul Harley, dec’d. And the said laborers hereby bind themselves to hire [crossed out: themselves] to the said John M. Kyle for the present year, to labor faithfully and industriously for him on said plantation according to his directions or the directions of his agents, to be obedient to his orders; to feed and otherwise attend to the stock on the place, and to pay for all damage carelessly or wantonly inflicted upon the same or upon the farming utensils. They further bind themselves to pay 50 cts per day for all time lost from labor and to work the usual numbers of hours in each day.
