State of Florida County of Jefferson Articles of agreement entered into on this 4 day of January 1867 between S. Sumter and D. Carn of the first part and the undersigned Freemen and Women of the second part, for work, labor, and attention upon the plantation of the said S. Sumter in the County of Jefferson and State aforesaid, known as the Ancilla place. 1st The said S. Sumter and D. Carn, contractors bind themselves to give to the undersigned Freedmen and Women One third of the cotton, one half of the corn, one third of the potatoes, peas, and syrup, crop made on the the place by the said Freedmen and Women, also to feed them in meat at the rate of three and one half pounds per week, provided they furnish their own bread. 2nd The said S. Sumter and D. Carn bind themselves to allow to each of said laborers 2 acre of land free of rent provided he remains and labors during the entire time this contract as herein specified. 3rd The said S. Sumter and D. Carn further agree to furnish comfortable quarters to all of said laborers and their immediate families and to furnish meat and meal

At the market prices for the support of all the families of said laborers who are unable to work, if so desired by the said laborers. The price of meal and meat so furnished to be deducted from the shares of laborers whose family is so supported. 4th The cotton see made and ginned on the place to remain for benefit of the land, and for use of Gin and Gin House. [Removed Article - 5th The attendance of a Doctor and medicines will be provided in all cases of sicknesses among the laborers or their families on the place wherever required by the Laborer and the cost of the same to be deducted from his or her share of crop.] 6th In consideration of the above contract and the things to be done on the part of the said S. Sumter and D. Carn; We the undersigned laborers, do agree on our part and contract with the said S. Sumter and D. Carn, to do and perform all the work usually done on a plantation in Florida and to plant and cultivate such crops as the said S. Sumter and D. Carn or their agent may desire. 7th Said Laborers further contract that in picking cotton they will each pick one hundred pounds per day and it is agreed that if they pick over one hundred pounds each per day, each laborer so picking shall receive fifty cents per hundred for such amount over one hundred pounds.

8th Said Laborers agree that when splitting Rails, the Task for each shall be one hundred rails per day of average size, and when employed [hoeing] the task shall be such as the Contractors and Foremen determine upon. 9th Said Laborers further agree that if any or either of them shall leave the plantation before the end of the year, he or she shall only be paid at the rate of four dollars per month for the time they have actually worked, all lost time to be deducted from above payment, and all after claims on the crop banned. In the event of any of the laborers voluntarily leaving the plantation before the expiration of the time contracted for or shall fail in the performance of any duty herein specified and provided for, it shall be lawful for the said S. Sumter and D. Carn to dismiss said Laborer with such an amount that is coming to them as the agent of the Bureau may direct. 10th Said Laborers further contract that they and their families will be orderly and respectful in their behaviour and promptly obey all orders given by the said S. Sumter, D. Carn, or their agent. 11th It is understood that each Laborer whose name is here unto signed, only contracts for himself and family and that this contract shall be in force from its date until the 25th day of December 1867. In testimony where we have hereunto set our hands this day and year above written.
