February 7th 1867 Articles of Contract between John E. Wirick of Jefferson County, Florida of the first part and we the freedmen whose names are here unto attached of the second part. The conditions of the Contract are as followers. The said J.E. Wirick agrees to furnish the land for the negroes to work and all the team necessary for the cultivation of the same, also to feed the team and to pay one half the blacksmith bills and also one half for baggin and rope. And we the freedmen on our part do agree to receive for our wages one half of the intere crop gathered and to pay to the said Wirick of the first part fifty bushels of corn for the use of each mule we may have in use. We also agree and bind ourselves to work subject to the entire control of and by the directions of the said Wirick of the first part. To take care of the stock to the best of our ability and every thing [pertaining] to the farm. We also agree and pledge our interest in the crop to the said J. E. Wirick or so much thereof as will pay the said Wirick all demands that he may have against us for supplies etc. that he may let us have. Also for an disobedience of orders or bad conduct the said Wirick shall have the right to dismiss him so doing from off the place

[crossed out section beginning on previous page: and he so dismissed shall forfeit all his interest one half to the balance of the hands and the other to Wirick.] In testimony whereof we the parties have hereunto set our hand and seals this the day and the date above written. Edwards, a Justice of the Peace, A Wirick, one of the witnesses of the above contract who certifies that the above instrument was carefully read and explained to the freedmen and that it was properly signed & sealed. Thomas H. Edwards Justice of the Peace It is ordered that in case of any difficulties arising out of this contract, the same shall be submitted to a Board of Arbitration composed of two reliable citizens, one chosen by each contracting party & the agent of the B.R.F. & A.L. whose decision shall be final.
