A Guide to Florida Governors and the Florida Cabinet

Lieutenant Governor

Introduction: The post of Lieutenant Governor has existed at two separate times in Florida history. The post was first established under the Constitutions of 1865 and 1868 as an elective post, with its holder serving as presiding officer of the Senate, although only voting to break a tie. The post was abolished under the 1885 Constitution with the last Lieutenant Governor serving out his term until 1889.

The post of Lieutenant Governor was revived under the 1968 Constitution (Article IV, Section 2) and continues to the present time. The Lieutenant Governor is charged to perform those duties pertaining to the Office of the Governor as are assigned to him by the Governor unless otherwise provided by law, and any other duties as may be prescribed by law.
