State of South Carolina District of Edgefield Articles of agreement made and entered into between Asa May of the County of Jefferson and State of Florida of the first part and Milage Mitchel, Nathan Mitchel, Butler Mitchel, Nelson Kemp, Isaac Simkins, Ann Mitchel, Abram Simkins, Victory Simkins, Freedmen and women, all of the District of Edgefield and State of South Carolina of the second part. The said party of the first part, for the consideration hereinafter named, agrees to and with the said party of the second part, to advance the money necessary to pay their expenses from said District and State to the County of Jefferson and State of Florida, to take them into his employ for the ensuing year (A.D. 1867) upon his plantation in said County of Jefferson and to retain them during the year provided they comply with these Articles of Agreement; to furnish them with suitable quarters; to allow them fuel from his plantation [section faded and crossed out]

and give them one third of the crop, the said party of the second part to feed themselves. And the said parties of the second part, in consideration of the premises, do agree to and with the said party of the first part to proceed to Florida and go to work upon the plantation of the said party of the first part on the first day of January next or as soon thereafter as may be agreed upon and to labor faithfully and diligently during the year 1867; and to respect and obey the orders and directions of the said party of the first part, his agent or representative, and they further agree that they will repay the said party of the first part the money advanced as herein agreed to pay their expenses from said District and State to the said County of Jefferson out of the proceeds of their years labor as herein agreed. And it is further agreed that in case of lost time a deduction shall be made at the rate of seventy cts per day for the men and fifty cts per day for the women, said money to be divided in the same proportion as the crops between the contracting parties. That all losses upon the plantation of planting utensils or stock caused by wilfulness or neglect of the said party of the second part shall be charged to the said party; that in case of the violation of these articles by any of the said party of the second part he or she shall or may be at once discharged from the plantation and ? such pay as a Board of Arbitration shall determine; that any one of the said party of the second part who shall leave the employ of the said party of the first part without just and sufficient reason shall forfeit all the wages that may be due at that time. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals on this the twentieth day of December A.D. 1866. [section crossed out] And the said party of the second part in consideration of the trouble and expense incurred by the part of the first part in removing them to Florida agree to remain in his employ for the space of _____ years after the termination of the period named in the foregoing agreement, and to enter into an agreement to that effect under the same terms as the foregoing when this shall expire.
